A total cash prize of N1.5m will be up for winning at the 36th edition of the Nigerian Breweries International Open Chess Championship which holds from December 12 to 15 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
The four-day tournament will be in seven-round Swiss event paring with the star prize winner going home with N250,000 and corporate gift from the sponsor.
Over 220 participants have so far registered for the tournament which will feature seven categories namely: Masters, Open, Amateur 1 and 2, VIP and Under-14 boys and girls.
At a press briefing ahead of the competition, president of the Nigeria Chess Federation, Lekan Adeyemi, commended Nigerian Breweries Plc for the unbroken partnership between the company and the NCF which has helped in the development of the sport in Nigeria over the years.
“Our partnership over the years has continued to yield positive results. This is the longest running corporate organisation-sponsored national competition in Nigeria so Nigerian Breweries deserve to be commended for their role in chess development,” Adeyemi said.
The Corporate Media and Brand Manager, Nigerian Breweries, Mr. Edem Vindah, who represented the Corporate Affairs Adviser, Mr. Kufre Ekanem, said the sponsorship remained a key element of the company’s several youth empowerment and talent development initiatives.
“The enthusiasm shown towards the game and the discovery of budding talents over the years has no doubt confirmed that Nigerian Breweries’ continuous partnership with NCF is not in vain,” Vindah said.
