Lord Sugar wants Sir Alex Ferguson to become the Tottenham manager

Former Tottenham chairman Lord Sugar admits he is somewhat perplexed by the tactics employed by Andre Villas-Boas this season, while he has the perfect person in mind to replace the Portuguese - former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Spurs have endured an inconsistent start to the campaign, which reached its nadir on Sunday as the north London club were humiliated at the Etihad Stadium with Manchester City plundering six goals past Villas-Boas' charges.

The Spurs boss has come under increasing pressure since the weekend thrashing, with reports emerging that the 36-year-old could soon see his White Hart Lane tenure come to an abrupt end.

Spurs have had particular difficulty in finding the net this term, with just nine goals scored in 12 Premier League outings, and Sugar claims to be baffled by the actions of the club's manager.

"I’ve struggled to understand AVB’s tactics. You have wondered how we are going to get a goal," Sugar, who was Spurs chairman for 10 years, told talkSPORT.

"Four, five or even six games before that [the 6-0 defeat to Manchester City] you couldn’t see where the goals were coming from.

“The formation that AVB plays, I don’t understand at all. I put my hands up, I am no great football expert, but I don’t understand it at all."

Michael Laudrup and Luis Enrique are being touted as a potential successors to Villas-Boas if he becomes relieved of his duties, but Sugar has a seemingly futile hope that the club can coax Ferguson out of retirement.

Spurs host Manchester United this weekend in a potentially decisive clash, and Sugar is planning to have a word with the Old Trafford icon should he come down to London to watch David Moyes' side in action.

"My dream would be that my good friend Sir Alex Ferguson will get itchy feet in about a year or so and decide he wants to get back into management and maybe bring his wonderful wife down to London and manage our team," Sugar added.

"That would be my dream. If he comes to watch the game, I will suggest some nice houses for him and his wife to stay in."
