Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, is planning a serious shake-up of his defence this summer, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones both set to be offloaded.
Mourinho is looking to bring in a new centre-half, with the England duo’s places under threat.
The United boss is understood to have had reservations about Smalling and Jones, even before Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle.
That defeat at St James’ Park exposed their vulnerability at the back, even though Mourinho’s side boast the best defensive record in the Premier League, conceding one goal fewer than runaway leaders Manchester City.
United have been linked with a £50m summer swoop for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire, while they could take advantage of the growing turmoil at Real Madrid with a move for France centre-half, Raphael Varane.
