Lopetegui was fired barely 24 hours after he agreed secretly to replace Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid manager.
Speaking to Cadena Ser, he admitted he was bitterly disappointed not to be leading Spain to the 2018 World Cup.
“I am very sad, but wishing that we have a magnificent World Cup and that we win.
“We have a magnificent team and I hope that we win the World Cup,” he said.
Lopetegui’s dismissal was confirmed during a press conference on Wednesday morning.
Initial confirmation from the Spanish FA, said the 51-year-old would depart following the 2018 World Cup.
But the federation’s president, Luis Rubiales, was unhappy with the situation and has decided to dismiss Lopetegui two days before Spain’s Group B opener against Portugal.
